Overview

About this course

Generative AI becomes more useful, and less mysterious, once you understand what is happening inside. This programme explains how large language models and image generators work in clear, practical terms, covering tokens, context windows, training versus everyday use, embeddings and diffusion, and then uses that understanding to get consistently better results from tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.

You go well beyond casual chatting. You learn structured prompting techniques, work with long documents and your own knowledge sources, generate and edit images, audio and video responsibly, and write beginner Python in Google Colab to call an AI model through its API, process a spreadsheet of records in one go, and build a small chat or search tool with a simple web interface.

Throughout the course you test outputs for accuracy, bias and safety, including hallucinations and prompt injection, and weigh up cost and data privacy. The final project is a working GenAI prototype for a real use case, such as a question-answering assistant over a school's or company's policy documents, a bilingual content helper or a customer-feedback analyser.

How the course runs

Classes are held live on Google Meet from Monday to Friday evenings, in 75-minute sessions. Most sessions include a hands-on exercise, and the Python work uses shared Google Colab notebooks, so nothing has to be installed.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Explain how large language models and diffusion image models generate content, and where they fall short
  • Apply structured prompting techniques, including few-shot examples, step-by-step instructions and JSON output
  • Work with long documents and knowledge sources using tools such as NotebookLM and Gems
  • Generate and edit images, audio and short video responsibly, respecting copyright and consent
  • Explain embeddings, semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
  • Write beginner Python in Google Colab to call an AI model API and process data in batches
  • Build a simple GenAI prototype with a web interface using Gradio or Streamlit
  • Evaluate outputs for hallucinations, bias, prompt injection, privacy and cost

Syllabus

9 modules · approximately 104 hours of live training

Module 1How generative AI works 12 hrs
Tokens, context windows, training versus inference, model families such as GPT, Gemini, Claude and Llama, open and closed models, and why models hallucinate.
Module 2Prompt engineering techniques 14 hrs
Role, context and constraints; zero-shot and few-shot prompts; step-by-step instructions; structured output as tables and JSON; and comparing prompt versions side by side.
Module 3Working with documents and knowledge 10 hrs
Summarising and comparing long PDFs, extracting data from documents, and grounding answers in your own sources with NotebookLM and Gems, with custom GPTs demonstrated (creating one needs a paid ChatGPT plan).
Module 4Image, audio and video generation 12 hrs
How diffusion models create images, prompting and editing images, text-to-speech and voice tools, short AI video, and the copyright, consent and disclosure rules to follow.
Module 5Embeddings, semantic search and RAG 12 hrs
What embeddings are, how semantic search matches meaning rather than keywords, and how retrieval-augmented generation combines search with a language model, shown with visual examples.
Module 6Python for GenAI in Google Colab 14 hrs
Python basics from scratch, reading CSV and Excel files with pandas, calling an AI model API securely, and processing a batch of records such as customer reviews.
Module 7Building simple GenAI apps 12 hrs
Turning a notebook into a small web app with Gradio or Streamlit: a chat assistant, a document question-answering tool and a bilingual content helper.
Module 8Evaluation, safety and responsible GenAI 10 hrs
Testing accuracy and hallucinations with simple rubrics, bias checks, prompt injection and data leakage, cost and rate limits, and handling personal data responsibly in India.
Module 9Capstone GenAI prototype 8 hrs
Design, build, evaluate and present a GenAI prototype for a real use case, with a short note on its limits and safeguards.

Questions about this course

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about this course.

How is this course different from AI Tools & Automation?

The Certificate in AI Tools & Automation is about using ready-made AI tools and automations to get office and business work done. Generative AI Fundamentals is about how the technology works and how to build with it: prompt engineering techniques, embeddings and RAG, beginner Python in Google Colab, calling AI models through APIs and building small GenAI prototypes.

Do I need to know Python or advanced mathematics?

No. Python is taught from the basics in a dedicated module, using Google Colab in the browser so nothing has to be installed. Ideas such as embeddings and diffusion are explained visually, without advanced mathematics. Comfort with computers and logical thinking is enough to begin.

Will I train my own AI model?

You will not train a large language model from scratch, as that needs computing resources far beyond a course like this. Instead you learn to use existing models well: grounding them in your own documents, calling them from Python and wrapping them in a simple app. Small examples show how training and fine-tuning work, so the ideas are clear.

Which tools are used, and are there any extra costs?

Classes use ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, NotebookLM, Google Colab, Gradio or Streamlit, and image and voice generation tools. Free plans, free tiers and trial credits are used wherever possible, and the trainer shows how to stay within free API limits. Any paid subscription or API usage beyond free limits is optional and not part of the course fee.

When are the classes, and what if I miss one?

Classes run from Monday to Friday, 7:00 PM to 8:15 PM IST, live on Google Meet, for 4 months (about 104 hours). Batch dates and the last date to apply are shown on this page. You need at least 75% attendance for the certificate; if you miss a class, catch up using the notebooks and learning materials shared for that module on your application status page. Classes are taught in English, with Hindi support where needed.

What is the fee, and what certificate do I get?

The total fee shown on this page is for the full 4-month programme, covering all live sessions, assessments and the certificate. After you apply, you can pay using the options listed on the Fees page; refunds, if any, follow our Refund and Cancellation Policy. On meeting the attendance and assessment requirements, and after approval, you receive the Certificate in Generative AI Fundamentals and a marksheet from Appsgain Technologies, verifiable online with the certificate number or QR code. It is a course completion certificate, not a university degree or guarantee of a job.
