If you are preparing for a career in banking, or have just joined a bank branch, you will hear the word “CASA” almost every day. Sales targets are built around it and job listings for banking sales roles mention it. Yet many beginners are never told clearly what it means or why it matters so much. This guide explains CASA in plain language.

What CASA stands for

CASA is short for Current Account and Savings Account. It refers to the money customers keep in these two kinds of deposit account, as opposed to term deposits such as fixed deposits (FDs) and recurring deposits (RDs), where money is locked in for a chosen period.

Savings account

A savings account is meant for individuals who want to keep their money safe, earn some interest and make everyday payments.

  • It earns interest, usually at a lower rate than a fixed deposit. Each bank sets its own savings rate.
  • Money can be withdrawn at any time, through the branch, an ATM, UPI, net banking or mobile banking.
  • Many variants ask you to maintain a minimum average balance, while a Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account (BSBDA), including accounts opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, can be opened with zero balance.
  • It usually comes with a debit card, digital banking access and a cheque book on request.

Current account

A current account is designed for businesses, shops, professionals and organisations that move money in and out every day.

  • It generally does not earn interest.
  • It is built for a high number of transactions, which suits businesses that receive and make payments all the time.
  • Some current accounts come with an overdraft facility, subject to the bank's credit assessment.
  • Balance requirements are often higher than for savings accounts and vary by account variant.

Why banks care so much about CASA

A bank earns much of its income by lending money at a higher rate of interest than it pays to depositors. Deposits are its raw material, and not all deposits cost the same:

  • On fixed deposits, the bank pays a relatively high rate of interest.
  • On savings accounts, it pays a lower rate.
  • On current accounts, it generally pays no interest at all.

That makes CASA deposits a low-cost source of funds. The larger the share of a bank's deposits held in CASA, the lower its overall cost of funds tends to be, and the more competitively it can lend. CASA customers also tend to use other products, such as loans, cards, insurance and investments, so a good savings or current account relationship often becomes a long-term relationship.

What is the CASA ratio?

The CASA ratio is the share of a bank's total deposits held in current and savings accounts:

CASA ratio = (current account deposits + savings account deposits) ÷ total deposits × 100

Imagine a branch with total deposits of ₹100 crore, of which ₹30 crore sit in savings accounts and ₹10 crore in current accounts. Its CASA ratio is (30 + 10) ÷ 100 × 100 = 40%. These are made-up figures to show the calculation, not data for any real bank. Banks track this ratio closely, which is why it comes up so often in branch meetings.

Balances matter, not just account numbers

A common beginner's mistake is to think CASA work is only about opening as many accounts as possible. Banks also look at the balances customers maintain, how actively the accounts are used and whether they stay active. An account that is opened and never funded does little for the customer or the bank, and many such accounts end up inoperative. Good CASA professionals focus on the right accounts for the right customers.

Where CASA fits in a banking career

Acquiring and servicing CASA customers is a core part of many retail banking roles, often with titles such as sales officer, relationship executive, personal banker or branch relationship manager. Day to day, the work can include:

  • Finding prospects: salaried employees, shopkeepers, professionals, small businesses and housing societies in the branch's area.
  • Explaining account variants, charges and features honestly and clearly.
  • Completing account opening with proper KYC documentation, including video KYC where the bank offers it.
  • Activating the account by helping the customer fund it and start using UPI, mobile banking and the debit card.
  • Following up to solve service issues and deepen the relationship.
  • Offering other products only when they genuinely suit the customer's needs.

KYC: the foundation of every account

Every bank account in India must follow the Know Your Customer (KYC) norms set by the Reserve Bank of India. In practice that means verifying the customer's identity and address with officially valid documents, collecting PAN, or Form 60 where the customer does not have a PAN, and keeping records up to date through periodic KYC updates. For current accounts, the bank also checks documents that prove the business exists. Mistakes in KYC are not just paperwork problems; they create compliance risk for the bank and delays for the customer. Accuracy and patience here are among the most valued skills in any branch.

Ethical selling: the skill that lasts

CASA roles come with targets, and targets create pressure. The people who build long careers resist the temptation to mis-sell. That means:

  • Explaining minimum balance rules and charges before the customer signs, not after.
  • Never opening an account the customer did not clearly ask for, and never bundling products without consent.
  • Suggesting a basic savings account when it suits the customer better than a premium variant.
  • Protecting customer data and never asking for OTPs, PINs or passwords.

Trust is what turns one account into a lifelong customer, and a lifelong customer into referrals.

Skills that help you succeed

  • Clear communication in English and in the language your customers prefer.
  • Product knowledge across savings and current accounts, term deposits and digital banking.
  • Comfort with KYC documents and account-opening steps.
  • Basic sales skills: prospecting, listening, handling objections and following up.
  • Discipline in tracking leads and keeping accurate records.

Learn CASA the practical way

If you want to build these skills in a structured way, our Certificate in CASA & Sales covers account products, KYC and digital onboarding, prospecting and ethical selling, with regular role-plays in live weekend classes. For a wider foundation, see the Certificate in Retail Banking and the Certificate in Banking Operations. These are skill-development courses. They are not coaching for bank recruitment exams, they are not certifications issued by any regulator or bank, and they do not come with a job guarantee. What they do is help you understand the work and practise it before you do it for real.
